Sporty Ol’ Stanley: We made it! Hurray!
Remember last week when I told you all about the wondrous magical world of lacrosse? Where people hold sticks with nets and run around with massive jerseys and helmets and fling a ball around at 100mph? Where we got the chance to beat England two times in two days with both of our national teams? Where we are in the top ten in the world and are looking to climb even higher with a good run of results in this year’s European Championships? No? You don’t remember any of this? At all? Shocking.
Today is a pretty big day for our lacrosse men’s team as they play their Quarter Final against Slovakia. Slovakia have had a strange tournament, losing their first two games and then narrowly defeating opponents in their second two to get to this stage. One positive for the Irish team is that their defence has been leaking worse than the Titanic so we should be able to net quite a few against them. It’s been a mixed bag of results in the tournament so far for the Irish, with an opening day loss to England, an extra time loss to Germany by one goal, a defeat by host nation Holland but a rally into good form in the last two games with 12-4 and 8-7 wins against Sweden and Finland respectively. Take that, Ikea.
If we can win today we go on to face Germany in the Semi Final which would be a good chance for revenge following the earlier defeat in extra time in the group stages. The women’s team have two more group games and then will play their Quarter Final on Thursday, so both of our teams are still in it to win it. What an odd feeling as an Irishman!
