Ramp It Up!
Magneto marries Professor X, screamed the headlines, and the gussets of a million fans wound themselves into thongs. Sly wordplay indeed, because it turns out Ian McKellen is merely going to officiate at Patrick Stewart’s upcoming nuptials, as he confirmed on last weekend’s Jonathan Ross show. Though one really shouldn’t use the word ‘merely’ in any news about Gandalf ‘making it so’. Amazing. Oh, and he hit on Matt Smith during the show too. So that’s Gandalf, Jean-Luc Picard and The Doctor in one beautiful paragraph. We love our job.
As a general rule we’re not into diddleyah shite, but we’ve gone done found something decent and worth mentioning. Because of our EU Presidency and also St Patrick’s Day, or something like that, various people including Fintan O’Toole have gone and done a book called A History of Ireland in 100 Objects. The hard copy costs €30 but the ebook is free here until the end of the month. SOUND.
Aside from Ramp.ie, natch, could Thumbs and Ammo be the best website of all… week? Replacing guns from classic movie stills with the universal thumbs-up sign is a powerful message of peace and righteousness. Not Jesus-type righteousness. Jack-Black-type righteousness.
Stamp It Down!
We know small town Ireland (because many of us here at Ramp.ie are from small town Ireland) sometimes has a problem with contextualising on a global scale, and what seems amusing and harmless in a local setting can have wider implications no one involved might reasonably have considered. But blackface? OH COME ON.
