Beauty: Grown-Up Grunge Make Up

Posted October 25, 2012 by Tara Power in Ramp Specials

It’s simple, really: grungey make up that doesn’t make you look and feel like you’re off to sit outside the Central Bank and look sad.

A dark smokey eye is a great, reliable look to have in your make up repertoire, but it’s not as easy as lashing on black eyeshadow up to your eyebrows. This grown-up grunge make up is a more glamorous and wearable version of the dark, smudged look that so often looks great in music videos, yet hideous in real life. What’s more, it can be adapted to suit a punky, rocker look or an elegant evening look: perfect for a night of wine quaffing.

The navy colour here is really spectacular.

Wonder if it’d work on a pale person with green eyes? Hmm.

Also, question: you know when you say that you’re using the eyeshadow stick as a primer? What is it about it that would work well as a primer – texture, colour, etc? What I mean is, can anything act as a primer, or are we after something thick-textured or really deep in colour?

I love how Tara is slowly turning the Ramp girls into well-educated make-up enthusiasts…a couple of months ago I didn’t own brushes or anything really bar eyeliner and foundation!

        Yay!

It would look spectacular with green eyes! Anything does, really, you’re a lucky bunch.
The primer is useful for two reasons:
      1) If you were to lash a dark eyeshadow onto your bare skin, it would “sink” into the skin and not appear as a vibrant colour. It would look faded and “bleh”. So the primer is essentially a clean canvas for the colour to look as bright and pigmented as possible on the skin.
      2) If you have oily eyelids, you may notice your eyeshadow (particularly dark eyeshadow) will crease after a few hours. A primer sets on the skin and doesn’t budge which, in turn, causes the eyeshadow not to budge. I don’t usually have this problem due to my super dry skin (hence I tend to not use a primer under foundation) but I still use a primer to get maximum colour pay off.

I need to talk more in my tutorials!

Actually, I’ll do one eye with a primer and one without so you can see the difference!

I have a woeful headache, so I might not be making myself very clear and you should all feel sorry for me, but what I meant was this:

You used the eyeshadow stick as a primer, rather than using a pot of primer. What is it about this eyeshadow stick that makes it ideal to work as a primer, as opposed to actually using a proper primer product? Can any deep/heavy colour function as a primer for a bright colour?

Oooh I see! Well, it’s not entirely necessary but I like to use a dark shadow stick or even a black eyeliner all over the lid just for that extra bit of depth when doing dark smokey eyes but a regular primer would work just fine!
