Last month the good folk of Yelp teamed up with Pacino’s of Suffolk st to deliver an evening of culinary discovery in a blind tasting event they called “Out Of Sight”. It’s worth mentioning that the chaps in Yelp sent along some pre-dinner homework. A list of delectable and interesting ingredients for us to form a recipe that we propose should comprise an element of the menu on the evening. But enough of that for now.


The evening was a buzz with Dublin’s best and brightest foodies including DublinByMouth and DeliciousNews! Also spotted Today FM producer Patrick Haughey and former Harmonia boss lady Norah Casey. We took our seats and were introduced to Chef Luca Mazza. He is the quintessential Italian chef – fantastic Italiano pronunciations, over gesticulation when he talks and full bodied passion about his ingredients, his method and his restaurant.

Pacino’s, nestled away on Suffolk st is an eatery I’d never paid much heed to so coming to an event like this really was an eye opener. Each course was served up once all of the evening’s diners had firmly secured their eyemasks. Drinking red wine with an eyemask on whilst wearing a white shirt is a bad, bad idea. Interestingly, the willingness to allow conversation to flow is a lot easier with everyone wearing eyemasks.


The courses were thick and fast giving us a brief repose to take to the notepad to attempt to write down what we’d just tasted; a aubergine caviar with Nutella, smoked salmon pate with strawberries, basil with mozzarella, wild mushroom pâté were just a few of the tantalising Italian tapas we’d to decipher merely using our expertly trained tastebuds!


The evening was fantastic fun and compered expertly by the ladies of Yelp and Chef Lucca Mazza, revealing the true ingredients of each course with side notes and wonderful anecdotes. Before we finished off, the winning dish was announced and delivered to tables: we were allowed to eat this one sans-mask thankfully!

Blogger Magda‘s proposed dish Magda’s Cauldron comprised of Chilli Stuffed Chicken Breast wrapped in Parma Ham was just incredible. Pacino’s liked it so much it’s been added to the menu! So head in and check it out. All in all; great night, wonderful company and fantastic food!
